Naphthol AS-BS is an azoic coupling component used in azoic dyeing, also known as ice dyeing. It is not a finished dye that produces a fixed colour by itself. During the dyeing process, Naphthol AS-BS is first applied to the fibre and then coupled with a suitable diazo component, commonly called a color base, to develop the final azoic colour on the textile material.
Also known as Azoic Coupling Component 17, Naphthol AS-BS is mainly used for cotton yarn, cotton fabrics, cotton printing, and selected cellulosic fibre applications. It is suitable for textile dye houses, yarn dyeing mills, fabric printing factories, dye distributors, and organic pigment intermediate purchasers that need a stable naphthol coupling component for bulk supply.
For more azoic dye intermediates, visit our Naphthol Dyes range.
Naphthol AS-BS is mainly recommended for:
Cotton yarn dyeing
Cotton woven fabric dyeing
Cotton textile printing
Viscose or rayon applications, subject to laboratory confirmation
Cotton-rich fabric programs requiring azoic colour development
Naphthol AS-BS may also be evaluated for:
Vinylon or PVA fibre
Silk
Blended fabrics containing cotton or viscose
Selected organic pigment intermediate applications
For silk, vinylon, blended fabrics, special-coated fabrics, or textiles requiring demanding wet-rubbing performance, laboratory testing should be completed before bulk production.
Azoic dyeing is a two-component colour-development system.
Prepare the Coupling Component
Naphthol AS-BS is prepared in a suitable alkaline system according to the textile process.
Apply to the Fibre
The cotton yarn, fabric, or printed substrate absorbs the coupling component.
Develop the Colour
A compatible diazo component or color base is diazotized and applied to the treated substrate.
Form the Final Azoic Colour
The coupling reaction creates the final colour directly on the fibre.
Wash and Finish
Washing, soaping, neutralization, and finishing procedures should be adjusted according to the required fastness and final textile use.
Because the final colour is determined by both the Naphthol AS-BS and the selected color base, colour approval should always be based on a lab dip or production trial rather than product name alone.
Naphthol AS-BS can be evaluated with different azoic diazo components to develop different colour directions. The final shade should be confirmed on the customer’s actual cotton yarn or fabric.
Available related color base products include:
| Diazo Component | Product Role |
|---|---|
| Fast Scarlet G Base | Azoic diazo component for cotton dyeing and printing programs |
| Fast Scarlet RC Base | Azoic diazo component for cotton fabric and colour-development applications |
| Fast Red B Base | Azoic diazo component for selected cotton dyeing and pigment-related applications |
| Fast Garnet GBC Base | Azoic diazo component for textile dyeing and printing programs |
The exact colour obtained from each pairing should be confirmed through laboratory testing. Please provide your target shade, fabric composition, required depth, and desired fastness level when requesting technical support.
For azoic dyeing, the final shade can vary depending on:
Selected diazo component or color base
Cotton quality and fibre preparation
Yarn count or fabric construction
Dyeing depth
Coupling ratio
Diazo development conditions
Washing and soaping procedure
Finishing treatment
Lighting conditions used for colour approval
Before confirming a bulk order, we recommend that customers provide one of the following:
Approved textile shade standard
Fabric or yarn swatch
Pantone or colour reference
Existing production sample
Required application method
Required washing, rubbing, chlorine, or light-fastness target
You can also review the general colour range through our Shade Card.
